Transportation of human remains

When transporting a loved one’s remains to the final resting place, FUNERAL COMPANY “InterSpetsServis” can provide much needed help in procuring the Death Certificate, preparing the remains for transportation (either through cremation, embalming or placing in an appropriate container for travel) and other services. The transportation of human remains can be carried out by airline, by train or by car.

The transportation of the body of the deceased person by car is the least expensive shipping option if case the travel distance is up to 2500 kilometers(1500 miles).

In order to make the transportation of the deceased foreigners who passed away in Russia abroad (so called “repatriation”) be carried out in the shortest possible time FUNERAL COMPANY “InterSpetsServis” advice the airline transportation.

If a close relative dies in Russia the family should contact the FUNERAL COMPANY “InterSpetsServis” to handle all arrangements for transportation of the body, including the airline for flying the body home.

There are a number of issues involved in transporting of human remains that require the assistance of the licensed funeral company “InterSpetsServis” to send or receive the remains. The remains will be examined and detained by Customs at the airport until all the necessary documents are obtained.

FUNERAL COMPANY “InterSpetsServis” will assist you in registering the death according to local regulations and get the Death Certificate and other necessary documents (in both languages) that must accompany the body back home.

In some cases, it is needed to seek permission in writing from the pertinent authority in the particular area where death occurred, for the body to be released to the funeral home.

The family of the deceased should contact a funeral home where the remains will be buried to receive the body on arrival and make arrangements for burial in order to give the information of the body recipient to “InterSpetsServis”.

Human remains, other than cremated remains, must be adequately secured in a casket, approved metal container, to prevent shifting and escape of offensive odors. If the remains are in a casket, the casket must be enclosed in an outside shipping container of wood. After we seal the wooden container we give the Statement of Assurance that the remains have been placed in a hermetically sealed (air tight) casket and that the coffin contains only the body in question.

If you contact “InterSpetsServis” to handle all the arrangements and give us the information of the person who will receive the body on arrival it is not necessary for family members to come to Russia and accompany the body back home. If a family member wishes to accompany a loved one’s remains to the final resting place he will have to buy an air ticket for the accompanying person.

If the remains have been cremated, the accompanying documents should be:
  • Cremation Certificate
  • Official Death Certificate
  • Statement of Assurance that the remains have been placed in a hermetically sealed (air tight) casket and that the coffin contains only the body in question
